Simon's Story

I met Nat and Claire during one of my local autism support group sessions, and I decided to visit their stables with my children. I thought that horse therapy could be beneficial for both of my children especially to my autistic son Simon. When we arranged the visit, I was a little bit apprehensive because Simon had tried horse riding in the past but due to his sensory processing difficulties we had to stop, as he couldn’t cope with the smell of horses and stables.

Although I only met Nat and Claire just once before the first visit, I trusted they would take good care of my children. Nat and Claire were very generous with their time during the taster session and displayed great patience and sense of humour when explaining everything to my children. I was very surprised to see that during the very first session Nat casually asked Simon, if he could help her with mucking out and getting his horse ready, which to my amazement, he agreed to and carried out his job to the best of his ability.

When I observed how Nat interacted with her horses during therapy sessions, I was struck by her ability to communicate and interact with horses using small gestures, commands and body language.

I could tell, that she is not only a very experienced horse trainer but she also has a very special bond with her horses, which are big and powerful  yet very sensitive animals. Although at times, I felt like I should give my children tips and instructions to help when they got stuck during the sessions, Nat and Claire reassured me that I should let my children work out the problems independently, which actually makes a lot of sense, when it comes to tackling difficulties and building confidence in young people.  As we attended further horse therapy sessions with Horses for Good, I noticed that my children became gradually more and more confident not only in terms of handling horses but also when talking to the members of staff at HFG.

In addition, I noticed that although I wasn’t directly involved in the sessions, as I merely watched my children from outside the paddock, I found myself happier and more relaxed after each session almost as if I was directly involved in therapy.

I can thoroughly recommend Horses for Good, as a horse therapy provider because they deliver amazing service to the neurodiverse community, many of whom struggle with their mental health and many other challenges. Nat, Claire and their staff are very knowledgeable and experienced at delivering therapy sessions, handling horses and interacting with their clients with special needs and it’s clear they put a lot of heart and effort into each and every session they run.
